MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE

WITH BRITTANY DEATON, NC LMBT #19611

Vodder Technique Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid Vodder. It's a gentle, rhythmic massage that uses light pressure and specific hand movements to stimulate the lymphatic system, a crucial part of the body's immune system responsible for removing waste and toxins.

Unlike traditional massage, which focuses on muscles, MLD targets the superficial layers of skin and the lymphatic vessels beneath it. The therapist uses a series of circular and pumping motions to encourage the flow of lymph fluid, reducing swelling and improving overall lymphatic circulation.

The Vodder Technique is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid. It's also used to reduce post-surgical swelling, alleviate chronic pain, boost the immune system, and promote relaxation and well-being. Due to its gentle nature, it's often recommended for individuals with sensitive skin or those recovering from surgery or illness.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, MLD is a gentle, non-invasive manual technique that has a powerful effect on the body. Research has proven its efficacy as a stand-alone treatment and in combination with other therapies.

Developed in france in 1932 by emil and estrid vodder, mld has grown to be the most well known manual technique to assist lymph flow and aid in drainage of tissues.

The skin is stretched and torqued in a specific manner, based on scientific, physiological principles that have proven to encourage lymph flow. If performed correctly with the correct pressure, direction and speed, this can greatly enhance recovery and facilitate drainage. It also has profound effects on systems in the body.

We've included this video to provide a visual example of an MLD session. This 30-minute session focuses on the face, neck, and shoulder area.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

During your Vodder Technique Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) session, you can expect a deeply relaxing and therapeutic experience.

HERE'S WHAT A TYPICAL SESSION ENTAILS:

  1. Consultation: Your therapist will begin by discussing your health history, concerns, and goals for the session. This will help them tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

  2. Relaxation: You'll be asked to lie down comfortably on a massage table, and the therapist will create a peaceful atmosphere with dim lighting and calming music.

  3. Gentle Touch: The therapist will use light, rhythmic strokes and gentle pumping motions on your skin. The touch is very light, as the lymphatic vessels are located just beneath the surface of the skin.

  4. Specific Sequence: MLD follows a specific sequence, starting at the neck and working down the body. This helps stimulate the flow of lymph fluid towards the lymph nodes.

  5. Pain-Free: MLD should not be painful. You may feel a gentle stretching or pulling sensation, but it should never be uncomfortable.

  6. Post-Session: After your session, you may feel relaxed, energized, and experience a reduction in swelling. It's recommended to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and further support the lymphatic system.

WHAT TO WEAR:
  • You will be asked to undress to your level of comfort.

  • You may choose to wear loose-fitting clothing or undergarments.

  • The therapist will use sheets and towels to drape your body, ensuring privacy and comfort throughout the session.

  • Improved Circulation: By stimulating lymphatic flow, MLD enhances blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells for faster healing and recovery.

  • Pain Reduction: MLD's gentle movements help reduce inflammation and stimulate the release of endorphins, natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body.

  • Detoxification: The lymphatic system is essential for removing waste and toxins from the body. MLD supports this process, enhancing the body's natural detoxification mechanisms.

  • Enhanced Immune Function: MLD helps stimulate the production and circulation of immune cells, leading to a stronger immune response and reduced susceptibility to illness.

MLD AND SURGICAL OUTCOMES:

MLD is indeed a great option for individuals seeking faster recovery from swelling and bruising after various surgical procedures, particularly those known to disrupt lymphatic flow. In addition to mastectomies, here are some other surgeries where MLD can be highly beneficial:

  • Plastic surgery: MLD can accelerate healing after procedures like facelifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast augmentation/reduction. It can help reduce post-operative swelling, bruising, and discomfort.

  • Orthopedic surgery: MLD can aid recovery after joint replacements, ligament repairs, or other orthopedic procedures by reducing swelling and improving joint mobility.

  • Reconstructive surgery: MLD can be helpful for patients undergoing reconstructive surgeries for various reasons, including trauma, burns, or cancer treatment. It can help reduce scar tissue formation, improve skin elasticity, and promote overall healing.

MLD can be particularly effective when initiated early in the post-operative period, as it helps to clear out excess fluid and metabolic waste products that accumulate in the tissues after surgery. This not only reduces swelling and bruising but also promotes faster healing and can even help minimize pain.

If you or someone you know is considering surgery, it's definitely worth discussing the potential benefits of MLD with their surgeon or a certified lymphedema therapist.
